What we tried in addition to analgesics
Distraction - distraction may work, particularly if it is directed to music or passive activity. Try and find something enjoyed, or of interest.
Rhythm - starting with the rhythm of the child or environment, and slowly slowing the rhythm down. Imagine that you are in an action movie and you want to move into a relaxed scene on a beach or in a forest near a stream. Rhythm can be music, light, movement, voice etc. Music can do wonders if the child enjoys relaxing music or singing.
Changed lighting - Bright lights can have an adverse effect on pain, lower the lights, and if safe use Candle light as the flickering can calm the senses.
Rocking - 'kinetic therapy' (the constant, gentle motion of rocking in a rocking chair, being rocked, or self controlled for older children)
Breathing - Actively watching and slowing the breath for older children.
Meditation - for older children.
Chronic Pain can impact people of all ages.
